Abstract

The alternation of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) within sleep itself is accompanied by changes in neuronal excitability throughout the central nervous system. And these changes in sleep and wakefulness are believed to arise from the activity of chemical agents that influence communication between neurons. The passage of excitability is mediated from one cell to the next across the synapse by chemical substances rel-;sed from the presynaptic terminal. These substances diffuse over the short distance across the synaptic cleft and change the activity of the postsynaptic cell. This process is called neotr ansrnission.
Some neurotransmitters such as monoamines are accessible to investigation and see ~ to play a particular role in the control of alert states, though other less well-known systems may also prove to be important.
Among over 30 endogenous compounds which have been proposed as chemical media ors of neuronal signaling, author reviewed the articles concerning several transmitters and puta ¢¥ve transmitters that have received the most attention in regard to sleep.
